Entertainment:  DVDs are upon us again
Monday, May 2, 2005 @ 11:50PM

Once again, another Tuesday is upon us and more movies are coming to DVD. This week we have up National Treasure and Phantom of the Opera and neither of them sucked, now they were not on the level of Shaun of the Dead but they were still decent.

Phantom of the Opera is a good movie that while may not be as good as the play is still enjoyable. This is the prefect movie for couples to get. The girlfriend will like it and the boyfriend will not hate it. The music is good and in surround sound, brings life to the movie by pulling you into the action. The biggest complaint I have about this movie is their should have been more development of the phantom, by the end of the movie all you are feeling about him is that he does not get killed but you do not have any great attachment to him, if he were to die you would not feel any great loss. As far as romance kind of movies go Phantom of the Opera is about 1000x better than the Notebook and if you have not seen the play already 100x less predictable than the Notebook. ......

National Treasure is one of those action movies you should see but never buy making it a perfect movie to rent with your monthly movie membership such as Netflix. This movie does follow a formula like most big movies. The movie has a clear introduction of all the main character within the first 15 or so minutes. The conflict is well defined at a specific point – us against them with well defined bad guys the only way to make the leader of the bad guys more defined would to be like star wars and make the bad guy wear all black all the time. There is a definite point of climax that everyone can see coming and there is a defined resolution ending with what most big movies have which would be the very end having something pop out that screams sequel ala Alien vs. Predator when the Alien pops out of the Predator. This movie does have some history in it but the true history is mixed in with so much made up crap you can not believe what they claim is real history and if you believe anything that happens or says in this movie as true then you are an idiot if you do not verify it by going to wikipedia.org first. In summery before I ramble on more this is a movie you should see but do not expect to get much out of it other than some entertainment for a couple of hours.
