World News: The editing of movies | Monday, April 18, 2005 @ 11:41PMToday the Washington Post printed and article about companies that take movies and "clean" them by taking out the parts that involve sexuality, violence, crude language or anything else that might be considered objectionable. One such movie that these companies have made "family friendly" is Saving Private Ryan so I started thinking and after you take out the blood and gore, you end up with about a 15 minutes long movie.
I always wondered how you could make Open Water an even worse excuse for a movie, well they figured it out by cutting out the one titty shot and cutting out the end were they die. So you are left with a movie with people in the hotel, then the boat, then floating in the water for most of the movie and then the credits start rolling. What a crappy that movie that would be, well I mean crappier than the unedited version. Click on Read More/Comments to read the rest of this rant.
So that got me thinking, why isn’t there a company that takes out all the boring stuff like character development and build up and just leave in only the stuff other companies are taking out? How about a company only leaves in the crude jokes and nudity from Harold and Kumar go to White Castle? I know by doing this it will only cut about 10 minutes out of the movie but it would make the movie more interesting. I mean who really watches that movie for the character development; the movie is about two guys trying to get to a White Castle and along the way; they smoke a ton of pot and see some titty. The other possible thing to do would be to add additional nudity and profanity to “enhance” the movie experience.
Even with what I have said I still have to support the right for people to be able to edit movies. The companies that are sanitizing movies are buying the movies and should be able to what ever they want to do with their copies. I as a consumer have a right to buy a movie and do what ever I want with it and if I want to rent out a sanitized version of the movie, I should be able to. However I would insist that the companies that are editing the movies are very clear in that they are rented out cleaned and sanitized version of the movie so I do not accidentally rent a sanitized version when I did not intend do. Just as I have a right to not buy a vulgar and violent movie I also have right to pass on a cleaned version of the same movie.
